As the market increasingly shifts more toward multi-cloud and hybrid environments, based on the foundation of portability, subscription-type licensing is becoming an expectation. Veeam has made the commitment to customers to offer more and more products via a portable license model. The benefits of this model for customers include:. VUL is a subscription model that can be used universally, providing users with an added element of portability, making the jump to cloud and hybrid environments even easier without any additional cloud fees.
VUL licenses are sold for a defined duration, from one- to five-year paid upfront terms or paid annually for a three-year term. These licenses can be used across a variety of Veeam products and workload types interchangeably.
This licensing offers all the benefits of a pay-as-you-go license, such as the ability to start small without lock-in, and the ability to pay for what you consume using a cloud-friendly OpEx budgeting model. But there are many more benefits to VUL that separates it from traditional subscriptions.
You no longer have to purchase licenses by individual product or restricted to a specific workload type. This new model makes a variety of products and features more readily available to more users. We call that portability! Use what you want, when you need it.
License portability also simplifies ordering and license management, which reduces the complexity of managing various SKUs by product or workload type. A workload can be a VM, physical server, enterprise application, cloud VM or a file share.
With VUL, customers can use the licenses to protect any workload they need, since the licenses are portable. Customers purchase licenses, sold in minimum quantities of 10 licenses, and can use those licenses to protect various workloads. The number of licenses generally needed equates to the number of workloads you are looking to protect.
Most workloads require just one license instance. Select the product, enter your workloads and your term of your choice. VUL licenses are sold in minimum quantities of 10 licenses. So, what do you need to purchase? You purchase VUL licenses in minimum quantities of 10 licenses.
With one- to five-year options, you can choose the term and payment schedule that best meets your needs. Pay upfront or pay annually; the annual option is available for three-year terms only. When the license expires, you must renew the license to continue using the subscription. All licenses include That already gave users several advantages.

As you can see, the setup is straightforward. Two or more parallel media sets created in parallel can cause some incoherent naming. Customers sometimes complain when they see that several tapes have an identical sequence number and were written at the same time. This is actually normal and does not cause any issues. On the day when the GFS run is scheduled, the job starts at and starts waiting for a new point from the source job. If this new point is incremental, tape GFS will generate a virtual synthetic full on tape.
If the point is a full backup, it will be copied as is. The tape GFS job will remain waiting for up to 24 hours, and if by that time a new point will not arrive, tape GFS will fail over to the previous point available. This creates a situation with backup copy jobs - because of BCJ's continuous nature, the latest point remains locked for the duration of the copy interval. If it happens that the GFS job has to create points for several intervals on the same day for example, weekly and monthlytape GFS will not copy two separate points, instead a single point will be used as weekly and monthly.
Finally, each interval keeps its own media set. For example, if a tape was used for a weekly tape, it will not be used to store a monthly point, unless erased or marked as free.
This baffles a lot of users - they see an expired tape in the GFS media pool, however, the GFS tape job seems to ignore it, asking for a valid tape. This whole default workflow could be tweaked using registry values, which were used by support to great effect. So, what improvements does Update 4 have to offer? First, two registry value tweaks have now been added to the GUI:.
If you look at the previous version's user guide page for GFS media pool, you will be greeted with a box saying that parallel processing is not supported for tape GFS. This is no longer true - Update 4 has added parallel processing for tape GFS jobs as well. The workflow is the same as for normal media pools, which was described in the first section.

If you want to reuse tapes previously used by BE, you will need to do a long erase on them so that Veeam will be able to use them. I can only say, I remember reading that I needed to perform a long erase with the Tape Library utility directly on the tape. I went to try to find the citation, and it appears from what I did find that perhaps a short erase would suffice.
It also wouldn't surprise me that I had to do it that way due to the way the system had been set up before.
Sure the long erase is better but the short erase still clears up "MIB" and tells Veeam that it can write over it. The other way to do this is to change the status of the tape to "free" I am quite sure that will allow the tapes to be overwritten without the erase. Brand Representative for Veeam Software. It seems like I am the only one with this problem or I haven't searched good enough for a possible answer. We have a mediapool for our Archive full with eight tapes, while six out of eight tapes have a regular expiration date, two of them never seem to expire, even if you mark them as free, they change their status back to "never".
Right now I am trying to figure out why the media pool behaves like that. It seems like this behaviour returns once in a week and every other backup to tape Job is pending in a query while the backup Job to tape for our archive waits for another tape, which does not happen, because the next tape that expires will be in May and of course we can't wait that long.
So what am I supposed to do? Eight tapes would be enough if two of them weren't blocked like this. Do you need more informations or screenshots? Thanks in advance Sebastian. Also, have you tried to erase given media and see whether it solves the issue? Aren't you exporting tapes to a media vault that has "protect all tapes" option enabled? The Option "protect" is disabled for 7 out of 8 tapes, only one tape which I marked as free seems to be protected.

My thought would be that all the backup data on that media has now expired and YES the tape would be free to re-use in the Pool but that the Expires In field would now become Not Defined and also Capacity and Free sizes would match and there are no Files recorded on the tape in the catalog as this Expires date has passed.
I suppose I also leaning towards the ability of the software to then return 'Free' tapes back to the Free pool. In the Tape Infrastructure view, open the Media node and check the Expires in field for the needed tapes.Flutter firebase login
You can sort the tapes by the expiration date and get the list of tapes that can be reused. So you have to say ok this date has passed. I can set this tape to free. The tape engine will however use this tape in scheduled jobs. I'm just at odds against how this works from a tape management point of view.
